Noxious Weeds in Washington

In Washington state, the control of invasive vegetation is governed by RCW 17.10 and WAC 16-750. These codes dictate the need for the designation of noxious weed species, the creation of county weed boards, and rules and regulations as related to invasive vegetation control. 

The Washington State Noxious Weed Control Board yearly reviews and revises the list of noxious weeds in the state to meet the needs of Washington's ever-changing landscape. Some of these species the state designates for elimination, and others are designated for control. County weed boards annually review the state list and determine if any additional species should be designated for control at the county level.

Noxious weeds in Washington are designated into one of three (3) categories: 

 

Class A Species

Class A species are invasive weeds whose distribution in Washington is limited. Eradication of Class A species is required by law.

 

Class B Species

Class B species are invasive weeds whose distribution in Washington is widespread in some areas, but limited in others. In areas where a species is limited, control to prevent its spread is required by law. Other Class B species may be designated on a local level by the County Weed Board.

Class C Species

Class C species are invasive weeds that are widespread in Washington but may be of ecological or economic importance in certain areas. County Weed Boards may choose to designate certain species on a county level. In counties where a Class C species is designated, control to prevent its spread is required by law.
