

FUNCTIONAL FAMILY THERAPY Functional Family Therapy is a short-term, home-based intervention that focuses on the interactions among family members. The intervention occurs in a five-step process that takes an average of twelve weeks to complete. The five steps inlcude:
Engagement - designed to decrease early program drop-outs.
Assessment - to clarify individual, family system, and larger system relationships especially the interpersonal functions of behavior and how they relate to change techniques.
Motivation - designed to change maladaptive emotional reactions and beliefs and increase alliance, trust, hope, and motivation for lasting change.
Behavior Change - which consists of communication training, specific tasks, and technical aids, basic parenting skills, and contracting and response-cost techniques.
Generalization - Develop relationships between family members and the community.
Each phase of treatment builds on the preceding phase. These steps of treatment are each accompanied by a set of goals and objectives which are part of the initial and ongoing training. Sessions are held weekly in the juvenile's home (although the Therapist's office may also be used occasionally) and are usually one hour long.
