JUVENILE RIGHTS

You have the right to:

  • Be told about your rights, rules, and expectations in detention.

  • Be treated with respect and fairness and to be protected from physical and emotional abuse.

  • Receive medical care.

  • Three nutritious meals per day.

  • Regular showers.

  • Clean bedding and clothing.

  • Contact your attorney.  Request forms may be completed during school.

  • Participate in educational programming.

  • Regular exercise.

  • Write and receive mail from people outside of detention.  All mail is screened for contraband by your Probation Counselor.

  • To visit parents or legal guardians during regular visitation hours.  Special visits must be arranged by your Probation Counselor.

  • Telephone privileges (privileges may be restricted if you make unauthorized calls).

  • Not be subject to physical force except as reasonably necessary and justified to prevent escape, injury to self and others, escorting during defiant behavior or damage to property.

  • File a grievance if you feel one of your rights have been violated.

If you feel you have been treated unfairly in detention, you may request a grievance form from Detention Staff.  Fill out the form and it will be reviewed with you by a Lead Worker who will attempt to seek a solution to your issue.  If you are unable to resolve the problem, the grievance will be forwarded to the Detention Supervisor or Manager.
