EXPECTATIONS

 

WHILE IN DETENTION, YOUTH CAN EXPECT STAFF TO:  

  • Clearly and effectively communicate what we expect of you.

  • Provide you with fair, ethical, and professional treatment.

  • Respond to your medical and mental needs and make appropriate referrals for services.

  • Hold you accountable for behavior that is illegal, unsafe, and inappropriate.

 

WHILE YOU ARE IN DETENTION, WE EXPECT YOU TO:

  • Follow the Directions of all Staff:

    DO:

    • Keep only authorized items in your cell

    • Exit your cell when directed to do so by staff.

    DON'T:

    • Debate a directive by staff.  Asking "why" at the time the directive is given is inappropriate.  You may approach staff at a later time during recreation to receive an explanation.

    • Attempt to manipulate staff by playing one staff against another.  All staff have the same expectations of you, but each staff has a different style.

     

  • Engage in Positive Staff and Peer Relations:

    DO:

    • Use appropriate language.

    • Respect the privacy of others residence and avoid peering into other cells.

    DON'T:

    • Use put downs and racial slurs.

    • Engage in physical contact (unless it is in the gym playing a sport).

    • Hit / assault others.

     

  • Follow detention expectations as written in this handbook.

  • Engage in Safe Behavior:

    DO:

    • Use detention property for its intended purpose (for example, your comb is for your hair, your sheets are for bedding, a basketball is for shooting hoops. 

    • Follow safety and security guidelines (Clear the Floor, Quiet Position, Drop Position).

    • Make sure that your food remains YOUR food.  Do not trade or give food to other residents.

    • WALK up and down the stairs in a safe manner.

    • Use the intercom for emergencies and sick call requests.  Do not use the intercom to ask what time it is, what's for dinner, etc.

    • Only enter your cell.

    DON'T:

    • Run in the facility.

    • Engage in horseplay.

    • Engage in self-harm.

     

  • Engage in Pro-Social Behavior:

    DO:

    • Cooperate with staff and other residents.

    • Avoid making hurtful and offensive comments.

    DON'T:

    • Exchange personal information (i.e. phone numbers, addresses, etc.)

    • Sag your pants or roll up pant legs.

    • Gamble or bet.

    • Discuss your crimes or brag about criminal acts.

    • Engage in behavior that is threatening, aggressive, and/or offensive.

     

  • Other Expectations:

    DO:

  • Fold your bedding neatly each morning.

  • Leave your mattress flat (do not fold it).

  • Organize your belongings neatly and place on your bed.

  • Flush your toilet.

  • Place your thongs (sole to sole) in your door handle when entering your room.

  • Turn in items not belonging to you when you first enter your cell.
