BEEF WEIGH-IN

APRIL 14, 2007

9 am-11 am

A NOTE ABOUT

CERTIFICATES and GREEN CARDS

Can you believe how fast the time goes by? It’s that time of year again when the certificates are coming due. The certificate shows proof you are working with your animal the allotted time before the fair. The 4-H Youth Development Program Policy states the animal must be under the 4-H members regular care and management for the set period of time prior to the official county exhibit activity. The amount of time varies with the animal. Check your EM0758 Policy for more details.

April 1st, Beef (120 days) certificate, and Green Cards are due at the 4-H office (only), not at weigh in. Deadline for enrollments for the Beef project is April 1.  Weigh –In for Beef is April 14, 2007---9 am-11 am

May 1st,  (90 days) certificates and Green Cards are due for Horse, Llama, Breeding Beef, and Dairy Any time after this date, you must write a letter to the Horse Advisory Committee with the reason why. Deadline for enrollments for the Horse project is May 1st.

June 1st, (60 days) Goat, Sheep, Swine, Cats, and Dogs certificates and Green Cards are due.

You can enroll in the 4-H program at any time but in order to show at the fair you have to be enrolled before any training begins.

4-H Green Card, What Are They Really?

Each year this is the BIG question that comes up. The confusion is in the word Green!

It really means “ 4-H Entry”.

The Green Card  (a full sheet of green paper) 4-H Entry is only used with animal entries. It must be turned in at the 4-H office at the same time as your Animal Certificates.

Superintendents like to receive the early entries in order to assist with the plans for the layout of the barns.  The form is also used as a scoresheet. It really doesn’t matter what color the form is, it is the department information that is important.  Remember when you fill out your entry for the fair use your exhibit number, (first four letters of your last name and the 6 numbers of your birthday).

You ask what about the Still life Green Cards?

Those smaller cards will be available at the Exhibit hall when you turn in your entry. With the entry, remember you must have a 3”x 5” card attached to each item with your name and what you learned as a result of working with the project. If you have more than one still life entry, you may want to get more entry forms early, just stop by the 4-H office in Mid- July.

DID ANY LEADER FORGET TO RE-ENROLL?

The deadline for the re-enrollments was February 15th. The county turned in the State report Feb 28th, but there are a few leaders who have not re-enrolled this year. It’s never too late to enroll in 4-H. Skamania County 4-H will accept enrollments all year.

There are different reasons for each deadline. Example:

1.        Re-enrollment deadline helps the state 4-H office determine the number of youth enrolled in the county program. We know there are new members who enroll throughout the year, but this first report helps the 4-H State Fair work on the allotments for the upcoming state fair.

2.        Deadline to enroll and show at the county fair is the same date as your animal certificate due date. Example: the beef certificates are due April 1st, so if you plan to show beef at the fair you must have your enrollment in at the same time.

3.        Deadline to show still life at the fair is July 1st.

You can enroll any time of the year, but you will need to follow the guidelines to show at the fair. If you have not re-enrolled this year, this will be your last Clover Reporter. Only enrolled members, leaders and superintendents will receive updates, postcards, and the Clover Reporter in the mail.

If you plan to be a superintendent, you must also enroll in the 4-H program.

Show Your 4-H Pride!

Support the Washington State 4-H
Specialized License Plate Bill!

4-H License Plate

The Washington State 4-H Foundation is pleased to announce the development of the Washington State 4-H Specialized License Plate!

Benefits of a 4-H license plate are easily recognizable – the plates will provide Washington State 4-H with great visibility and a great way for state 4-H’ers to show their pride and support for 4-H.  Proceeds from the sale and renewal of all Washington State 4-H Specialized License Plates will be used to support programs and build endowments for the benefit of 4-H youth across the state.

The WSDOT Special License Plate Review Board will not be accepting application packets until June of 2007. The 4-H Foundation will submit its 4-H packet for consideration at that time.  One of the packet components is the requirement that signatures for commitments of 3,500 plate sets, or registered vehicles, be obtained.

Washington State 4-H Foundation
7612 Pioneer Way E
Puyallup
, WA 98371-4998

We know there will be many people throughout the state that will want to express their commitment to 4-H by proudly displaying the 4-H plates on their cars.  By obtaining special plates, state 4-H’ers will become rolling billboards for Washington State youth.  In this way, 4-H motorists can “drive home” the message that Washington State 4-H and its programs are important to them, their families, and the state!

Register your support of the Washington State 4-H Specialized License Plate!  Help get the signatures

needed for this License plate in order to support the Washington State 4-H program.

JUDGING PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS THAT USE POWER POINT

Christy Price

We have had youth using Power Point as a tool for their public presentations for several years. We use the same evaluation form as for other public presentations. This is my perspective on power point. The power point tool is no different than a child using a microwave to bake the cake or a child using a serger to construct a garment. Those are only tools; the final product still needs to meet a given standard. That standard is outlined on the score sheet. Just because a person uses power point slides does not make it a better presentation. If it is not used correctly, the slides have too much text, colors are not good, size of letters are too small, etc., then the presentation is no different than the child with a poster that can't be read, is confusing, etc.

Often people are willing to jump to an association that if the child uses the newest equipment or "gadget" then the finished product is better. In my book, the finished product is "better" only if the standard is met -- the process should not matter or be more important.
